Mikumi Shimizu, 15, has a dream of a glamorous life in the city, but her unexpected death in the quiet village of Sotoba sets off a terrifying chain of events that transforms the hot summer into a season of blood and horror. Young doctor Toshio Ozaki begins to suspect the nature of the disease and realizes that to uncover the truth, he must abandon his humanity. Meanwhile, Natsuno Yuki, a rebellious youth from the city, is haunted by Mikumi's sudden death and must come to terms with the tragedy of his own friendship. Toshio and Natsuno form an unconventional group to save Sotoba before it becomes a city of bloodshed. Shiki, based on the horror novel by Fuyumi Ono, goes beyond the usual vampire story. The sorrowful tale of salvation in a world where individuals cannot distinguish between good and evil is told. Freed by God, Shiki, what vampires call themselves, are only interested in their own lives and must confront the fear of the villagers, who are paranoid and non-believers. Shiki explores the boundary that distinguishes humans from monsters.
